Abdulaziz Omar Al Farouq was charged Friday with first-degree terroristic threatening, being a felon in possession of a firearm and another firearm charge. His bail was set at $200,000, police said.

The shooting occurred just before 11 p.m. Thursday at the Sheraton Waikiki at 2255 Kalakaua Ave. Police said Al Farouq brandished a handgun and fired one shot at a 42-year-old man but missed. Police did not reveal a motive for the shooting and said the suspect and victim did not know each other.

The victim’s coworkers disarmed and detained Al Farouq and called police, according to a Honolulu Police Department spokeswoman. Police arrested Al Farouq at the scene about 10 minutes later and took him to a hospital for a medical evaluation before booking him.

Criminal records show Al Farouq is a registered sex offender in Hawaii with a lengthy criminal history that includes felony convictions for sex assault, burglary, promoting a dangerous drug, auto theft, robbery and theft.
