A 74-year-old woman was found unresponsive with “traumatic injuries” at a Waipio Gardens apartment in Mililani Sunday night.

Honolulu police arrested a 33-year-old man on suspicion of murder in connection with the death of his 74-year-old mother who was found unresponsive in her apartment with “traumatic injuries” in Mililani Sunday night.

Police said today that the victim was found with traumatic injuries to her face and neck at the Waipio Gardens Apartments complex at 95-24 Waihau St. shortly after 8:10 p.m.

Her dog was also found dead with traumatic injuries.

Waipio Gardens resident Brenda Dixon said she was in her apartment when she heard what sounded like glass breaking.

She opened her front door and saw a man on the second floor of a separate building across from her unit. Dixon recalled the man had one leg over a balcony.

He was raising his voice and appeared belligerent, she said. “He appeared to be drunk.”

“He was mad. He was upset. He was throwing beer bottles,” she added.

Dixon called police and the man at some point fled the area.

She wasn’t aware a homicide occurred at the apartment across from her unit until police informed her. “It saddens all of us.”

Dixon said she does not know the suspect or the victim.

Lt. Deena Thoemmes of the Honolulu Police Department’s Homicide Detail said police located the 33-year-old man trying to break into a nearby church on Waimakua Drive at about 11 p.m.

Officers called Emergency Medical Services to treat the suspect for lacerations on his hands.

Police then arrested him on suspicion of second-degree murder, first-degree cruelty to animals and attempted burglary.

The investigation is ongoing.
