After a period of relative quiet, the coronavirus is showing up again within Hawaii’s prison system.

Heavy news came Thursday from Arizona, with the first confirmed coronavirus-related death of a Hawaii inmate at the Saguaro Correctional Center. That followed Wednesday’s announcement that eight inmates at Waiawa Correctional Facility have tested positive, triggering the quarantine of 130 inmates, contact tracing and staff testing with help from the National Guard. As in any crowded environment, quick intervention and actions will be crucial to preventing further spread.
