This U.S. Geological Survey map shows the location of a magnitude 7.1 quake southeast of the Philippines today.

An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.1 struck off the southeast coast of the Philippines but did not generate a Pacific-wide tsunami that would threaten Hawaii, officials said this morning.

The quake struck at about 7:46 a.m. Hawaii time and was centered about 39 miles east of Pondaguitan, Davao on the island of Mindanao, at a depth of about 46 miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said the quake did not pose a tsunami threat to Hawaii
