Brush fire closes portion of Daniel K. Inouye Highway on Hawaii island

Hawaii island firefighters are fighting an estimated 320-acre brush fire at Daniel K. Inouye Highway in the between the South Kohala and North Kona districts.

The fire is between the 46 and 48 mile markers on the highway. The Hawaii County Civil Defense Agency said Satiurday that the fire was 75% contained but that crews will stay at the fire through the night. The Hawaii Fire Department and the Division of Forestry and Wildlife are among the agencies fighting the fire.

The highway remained closed through the night from Old Saddle Road near the 42 mile marker to the Highway 190 junction. Old Saddle Road can be used as a detour.

Conditions in the area are “dry and windy,” the civil defense agency reported.
