Lahaina man, 54, arrested after bystanders thwart sexual assault in women’s restroom

Maui police arrested a 54-year-old Lahaina man after he allegedly attempted to sexually assault a 22-year-old woman in a women’s restroom at Lahaina Harbor.

Officers responded to a call of a woman who had been stabbed in the restroom at the harbor at about 9 a.m. Sunday. When they arrived, they found a man detained by several bystanders.

Police said the woman was exiting a bathroom stall when the man exited another stall while holding a knife. The suspect then forced the woman into the stall where he allegedly attempted to sexually assault her.

Police said a struggle ensued, resulting in a hand injury to the victim. The woman screamed for help at which time bystanders and family members came to her aid.

Medics treated the victim at the scene.

Police arrested the suspect on suspicion of second-degree attempted murder, first-degree sex assault, kidnapping, second-degree assault and first-degree terroristic threatening.

Correction: Maui police issued a correction that the alleged assault happened Sunday morning, not Saturday, as was reported in an earlier version of this story.
