A Honolulu traffic camera at South King Street and Victoria Avenue shows a large police presence at McKinley High School early this afternoon as officers investigated a threatening case.
Honolulu police have reopened South King Street at Ward Avenue after shutting it down to investigate a possible bomb threat.
According to HPD, officers were called to 1039 S. King St., which is the campus of McKinley High School. They received a phone call about a possible bomb threat to the campus at 11:20 a.m. Police shut all lanes of King Street before 11:45 a.m.
A state Department of Education spokesperson said a possible bomb threat was called in to the school so the campus was evacuated. All students and staff walked over to Thomas Square a few blocks away at 12:50 p.m., according to a letter sent to McKinley High School parents and guardians.
“Please know that all threats to our school or students are taken very seriously and are investigated thoroughly,” according to the letter. “We wanted you to have the facts so that you can discuss them with your child and emphasize the seriousness of this issue. If you discover anything that can assist in the investigation, please contact us immediately.”
HPD gave the all-clear shortly after.
“Officers checked the campus but did not find any suspicious items. Students and staff returned to the school around 12:40 p.m.,” said Honolulu police spokesperson Michelle Yu in an email.
