Man, 63, critically hurt in single-car crash near Sandy Beach

A 63-year-old man was critically injured Thursday after he crashed his car on Kalanianaole Highway near Sandy Beach.

Honolulu police said that at about 3 p.m., the man was driving erratically on the highway near the the parking area of Sandy Beach when he lost control of the car, collided with a wooden barrier, crossed back over the highway, and crashed into a chain link fence.

According to Honolulu Emergency Medical Services, paramedics responded to the crash near the Kealahou Street intersection, treated the man and took him to a trauma center in critical condition.

Police said the man was wearing a seat belt and that speed, drugs, and alcohol do not appear to be contributing factors in the collision.

Honolulu police closed Kalanianaole Highway from Kealahou to the west entrance of Sandy Beach for several hours while they responded and investigated.
