Maui police this afternoon arrested a 13-year-old girl on suspicion of first-degree terroristic threatening after she allegedly made a threat against Kalama Intermediate School.

“The juvenile’s parents were notified and informed of the circumstances regarding this incident,” according to a statement.

In addition to Kalama, Maui police today investigated several threats toward Iao School and Baldwin High School amid stepped up police presence at the three campuses.

The girl was arrested at approximately 3:20 p.m.

MPD reports family court was notified of the investigation and the girl was authorized to be released to her parents.

The girl’s identity was not immediately released.

“The investigation remains ongoing and active for the other affected campuses,” MPD said in a statement. “We want to assure the community that an increase in police presence in and around the school campus and throughout the area will continue throughout the week.”

MPD urges the public to remain vigilant and immediately report any suspicious behavior.

A letter obtained by the Star-Advertiser was sent today to parents and guardians of Iao School, Kalama Intermediate and Baldwin High School in response to threats made to the three campuses.

“All threats to our schools and students are taken seriously and are investigated immediately and thoroughly,” said Baldwin-Kekaulike-Kulanihakoi-Maui Complex Area Superintendent Desiree Sides in the letter. “Impacted schools are working closely with the Maui Police Department to investigate each incident. There is no recommendation from law enforcement for further security actions at this time.”

The schools remained open today with an increased police presence. Sides urged remaining vigiliant and reporting any suspicious behavior in the neighborhood, online or on social media.

“We encourage parents to speak with their child about making the right choices and the serious consequences of their actions,” Sides said in the letter. “We remind everyone that terroristic threats are considered Class A student conduct offenses with penalties ranging from detention to dismissal with the possibility of arrest and serious criminal charges.”

The Maui Police Department has widened its investigation and increased to include multiple schools.

“The Maui Police Department is aware of multiple threats at various schools throughout Maui County,” MPD said in a new media release today.

“There will be an increase in police presence in and around the various school campuses and throughout the area,” police said in a statement.

The additional schools were not named.

The Maui Police Department has increased police presence in and around Baldwin High School due to a threat of a potential shooting at the school.

“We are actively working with school officials to assess the situation, and while we understand that this heightened presence may cause some concern, please be assured that we are taking all necessary precautions to address the situation swiftly and effectively,” according to Maui police in a statement.

The threat was written in a bathroom and the photo was circulated on social media, according to Baldwin school principal Keoni Wilhelm. “The location is undetermined at this time, but the threat appears to be made against our campus and is being circulated on social media,” he said in a letter to parents.

MPD said in a bulletin that they are actively investigating the threat and urge the public to report any suspicious activity.

“Please rest assured that we are committed to maintaining a safe environment for everyone in our community,” Maui police said in a statement.

The school remains open with no schedule changes.
