H-1 eastbound lanes to be closed

Two eastbound right lanes on the H-1 freeway from the Makakilo Interchange to Kualakai Parkway will be closed Sunday night through Friday morning for construction.

The work, dowel retrofitting, will take place nightly from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. The state Department of Transportation advises motorists to use caution while driving through the work area and to allow for extra travel time.

Tilker will head Police Commission

The Honolulu Police Commission has elected a new chairman to replace Christine Camp, who resigned from the position earlier this month.

Marc C. Tilker will serve a one-year term as chairman, and Craig Watase will serve as vice chairman, the commission voted Wednesday.

The seven-member Police Commission is responsible for hearing complaints against officers, making recommendations on the budget and completing an annual review of the top officer.

Tilker said Camp resigned for business reasons.

Waterline fails at park

The state has temporarily stopped issuing new camping permits for Polihale State Park on Kauai after the main waterline broke Wednesday night, leaving no water to operate toilets or showers.

Polihale remains open, but the parks division is notifying persons with camping permits for this weekend of the outage.

The break drained the park well, but the staff was able to stop the pump in time to prevent it from being damaged.

State Department of Land and Natural Resources officials said they hope the well will have replenished itself by Monday so the repair crew can locate the leak and make repairs.

Two portable toilets were delivered to the park yesterday, and two more will arrive today.

The public is asked not to use the restrooms.

Search goes on for swimmer

Maui fire rescue and Coast Guard crews will continue a search today at first light for a female swimmer reported mi

ssing shortly after

3 p.m. off Kaanapali.

The woman was swimming in waters near Puu Kekaa, known as Black Rock.

Fire rescue personnel responded with two rescue boats and ocean rescue divers, a county news release said.

Air One and six county ocean safety officers on personal watercraft assisted in the search.

The Coast Guard also sent out a vessel to assist in the search. The search was discontinued at nightfall.
