Honu will be released July 4

Kohala, Hawaii » Besides the nation’s birth date, July 4 is also Turtle Independence Day at the Mauna Lani Bay Hotel and Bungalows on the Big Island’s Kohala Coast.

Since 1989, Mauna Lani Bay Hotel and Bungalows has received 3- to 5-month-old Hawaiian green sea turtles from Oahu’s Sea Life Park and raised them in the saltwater ponds of the resort, according to an announcement. When the turtles gain enough weight and grow to a minimum shell length of 35 cm, they are released into the ocean fronting Mauna Lani. Over the years, Mauna Lani has released 206 honu.

The resort will host a barbecue from 9:30 a.m. to noon July 4, with the turtle celebration set from 10:30 a.m. to noon. The turtle celebration is free.
