Buzzing about bees

Honeybees will be the focus of a free expo Friday sponsored by the University of Hawaii College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources. International and local bee researchers will present their most recent findings during talks throughout the day at the East-West Center’s Keoni Auditorium. Honey producers from various islands will provide free samples from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

UH board of regents re-elects 2 officers

Howard H. Karr has been re-elected to serve a one-year term as chairman of the University of Hawaii Board of Regents.

The University of Hawaii system also announced Thursday that Dennis I. Hirota has been re-elected to serve as vice chairman of the 15-member board.

Karr and Hirota joined the board in 2008.

Karr is a retired First Hawaiian Bank executive. He was born in Honolulu, graduated from Roosevelt High School and earned a bachelor of business administration from the University of Hawaii with a major in accounting.

Hirota is president of civil engineering and surveying consulting company Sam Hirota Inc. The Punahou School graduate holds a doctorate in civil and sanitary engineering from the University of Michigan.
