Reduce chemical runoff

Homeowners and others who tend landscaping can learn how to reduce chemical and nutrient runoff at a free workshop Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon at the Hui Ku Maoli Ola nursery in Kaneohe. Manhole overflow fouls Kalihi Stream

A wastewater discharge into a storm drain yesterday prompted the state Health Department to warn people to stay out of Kalihi Stream from 1457 Ahonui St. to adjacent waters in Keehi Lagoon.

The department’s Clean Water Branch said about 1,175 gallons spilled out of a manhole due to a line clogged by grease.

City crews posted warning signs along the affected areas.

Ethics panel seeks 2 new members

Applications are being accepted to fill two positions on the five-member Hawaii Ethics Commission.

The openings are for the seats held by William Montgomery, who moved to the mainland, and David Randell, whose term expires June 30.

Applicants must be U.S. citizens, residents of the state of Hawaii and may not hold other public office.

The Ethics Commission handles ethical inquiries into legislators, lobbyists and state employees.

Applications will be reviewed by the Judicial Council, which is made up of Hawaii Supreme Court Chief Justice Mark Recktenwald, judges, lawyers and members of the public.

Snow, wind create hazard on summits

The cool temperatures and a passing weak storm front brought snow to the summits of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa on the Big Island. Both mountains got a few inches of snow Friday night that was visible yesterday morning.

The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory for both summits and for Haleakala on Maui because of cold westerly winds of 30 to 40 mph, gusting up to 50 mph.
