Kulukulualani breaks through

After finishing second five times in the past seven years, Manny Kulukulualani broke through yesterday to win the Bud Light Kanaka Ikaika State Championship.

Kulukulualani, competing in the OC-1 (one-man outrigger canoe) division, finished the 19-mile long course from Waimanalo Beach Park to Kaimana Beach in 2 hours, 20 minutes and 15 seconds. Karel Tresnak, who beat out Kulukulualani for three titles, was second in 2:21:06.

Defending state champion Jimmy Austin did not compete yesterday due to illness, but he won the overall Poai Puni Series with 588 points. Claiming the women’s long-distance title was Lori Nakamura (2:39:44). Zsolt Szadovszki (2:14:40) won the long-course surfski division. First to finish the 8-mile short course was Jim Foti.

Sea Warriors capture tourney

Caira Pires’ two-run homer in the bottom of the third inning gave Hawaii Pacific the lead for good as the No. 22-ranked Sea Warriors went on to defeat Chico State 5-2 in the championship game of the Tournament of Champions softball tournament in Turlock, Calif.

Earlier yesterday, HPU (26-9) advanced to the gold-bracket title game with a 3-1 victory over Sonoma State.

» Hawaii-Hilo (20-10) went 2-0 yesterday to win the silver bracket of the 22-team tournament. The Vulcans defeated Cal State Monterey Bay 6-3 and finished with an 11-3 win over Humboldt State in five innings.

Ippen will speak at QB club

Tae kwon do master David Ippen will speak at today’s Honolulu Quarterback Club luncheon. A new tae kwon do center in Moiliili will be among his topics The luncheon at the Maple Garden restaurant begins at 11:30 a.m.

Hawaii blanks LaTech in tennis

Hawaii defeated Louisiana Tech 7-0 in women’s tennis yesterday at the UH Tennis Complex.

Six UH players won in singles and doubles matches — Barbara Pinterova, Katarina Poljakova, Xenia Suworowa, Natasha Zorec, Alyssa Nafarrete and Aglae Van Den Bergh.
