Keiki easter fun

Children 12 and under are invited to a free Easter egg hunt and games tomorrow at Koko Head District Park. “Easter Eggs­travaganza” is sponsored by the city Parks Department. Marines, sailors begin deployment

Nearly 300 Marines and sailors with the 1st Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, left Hawaii Wednesday night for a seven-month deployment to Garm­sir in Af­ghani­stan’s southern Hel­mand province.

Training and mentoring the Afghan national security forces will be among their tasks.

Overall, about 1,000 Marines and sailors from the unit are deploying to Af­ghani­stan this month.

Destroyer heads to Asia, Middle East

A Pearl Harbor-based guided missile destroyer is due to leave this week for a deployment to Asia and the Middle East.

The USS Hopper is scheduled to leave Oahu tomorrow. Its crew of more than 275 sailors is due to conduct ballistic missile defense, work with allies and participate in maritime interdiction operations.

4 vie for job as chancellor on Big Island

Hawaii Community College announced yesterday that four people have been selected as finalists for the position of chancellor. They will participate in campus visits and public forums in Hilo and West Hawaii on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The finalists are:

>> Daniel A. Bain, president of Independence Community College in Independence, Kan.

>> Alexander Capdeville, a professor in the adult- and higher-education graduate program at Montana State University.

>> Kathleen Curphy, a doctoral degree candidate who has been provost for Minnesota State Community and Technical College.

>> Noreen Yamane, interim chancellor of Hawaii Community College since July. Before that she was HCC interim vice chancellor for academic affairs.

The public is invited to open forums for the candidates, on Tuesday at HCC’s Hilo campus in the Kaneikeao Building (Building 379, Room 1) and Wednesday at the West Hawaii campus’s culinary courtyard.

On Tuesday, Capdeville will appear at noon, Curphy at 1 p.m., Bain at 2 p.m. and Yamane at 3 p.m.

On Wednesday, Capdeville will appear at 9 a.m., Curphy at 10 a.m., Yamane at 11 a.m. and Bain at noon.

Hawaii Community College has about 2,800 students. The state plans to build a new HCC-West Hawaii campus at Palama­nui, on a 78-acre site north of Kona Airport.
