Honolulu police confiscated what has tentatively been identified as an albino Burmese python snake in Ewa today.

Police said they went to the home in West Loch based on a tip. The family that owned the 7-foot long snake offered no resistance to giving it up after being told they would be granted amnesty from state laws prohibiting the ownership of snakes, officials said.

Police turned the snake over to the Hawaiian Humane Society, which transferred it to the state Department of Agriculture. That agency, in turn, is expected to offer it to the Honolulu Zoo for display purposes.

Keoni Vaughn, director of operations for the Humane Society, urged the public to voluntarily turn in any illegal items they may own to avoid prosecution. The maximum penalty for possessing an illegal animal is $200,000 or up three years in prison.

The python is the second snake and fourth illegal animal to be confiscated by police since last week.
