Coast Guard helicopter rescues kayaker near Lanai

A Coast Guard helicopter and rescue swimmer rescued an 18-year-old man who got into trouble while kayaking from Maui to Lanai.

The man was one of two kayakers who activated a personal locator beacon at about 6 p.m. Tuesday. A helicopter from Barbers Point located the kayaker in the water near an overturned kayak near Manele Bay and lowered a rescue swimmer into the water to recover the man. He was flown, safe and uninjured, to Kahului.

Another 18-year-old man and his kayak were located safely ashore in Manele Bay.

The Coast Guard says maritime accidents can occur quickly and without warning and recommends all mariners carry safety equipment such as flares, VHF radio, personal locator beacons and life jackets.
