Perry, Price hold on to No. 1, but KRTR takes 18-34 group

Erika Engle

Morning radio is still dominated by Michael W. Perry and Price on KSSK-FM 92.3 and AM 590 among all listeners and among adults 25 to 54, but by a thinning margin, according to the quarterly Arbitron Inc. survey of Honolulu stations taken from March 31 to June 22.

KSSK-FM remains the top-rated station among listeners 12 and older, but also by a slimming margin, with competitors and sister stations increasingly encroaching on its market share.

The KRTR-FM 96.3, or "Krater 96," morning show featuring Dave Lancaster and Sistah Sherry is top-rated among 18- to 34-year-old adults.

The Krater morning show beat the hip-hop hi-jinks of Sam the Man on KDDB-FM 102.7 by more than three share points.

KRTR also is the No. 1 station among adults 18 to 34 and 25 to 54 from 6 a.m. to midnight Mondays through Sundays. Around the clock, Krater 96 beat out youth-targeting "Hip Hop and Hits" sister-station KPHW-FM 104.3, which was in the top spot a year ago, as well as "Hawaiian Style & Reggae" KDNN-FM 98.5, which took No. 1 in the Winter 2011 survey among 18- to 34-year-olds.

The "KC and Taka" morning show at KPHW-FM 104.3 jumped to fifth-ranked among morning shows from No. 11 a year ago, while classic rocker KPOI-FM 105.9 fell to No. 17 from No. 8 in the morning, when it is automated.

It also fell to a 17th-place tie with talk radio KHVH-AM 830.

The rhythm-and-blues oldies format adopted in September by KHJZ-FM 93.9, which also changed its call letters from KIKI, is tied for No. 10 among the overall audience, while a similar, though older-skewing and longer-running format on KUMU-FM 94.7 is ranked third.

KUMU’s morning show with Frank B. Shaner and Mandy is No. 3 overall, while the KHJZ morning team of "Kutmaster Spaz" and "Jimmy da Geek" fell out of the top-10 slot.
