Hawaii jobless rate up to 6.1% in July from 6% in June

Hawaii’s unemployment rate rose to 6.1 percent in July from 6 percent in June, the first increase in more than two years, according to a report released today.

The number of unemployed totaled 38,400 in July, an increase of 100 from June, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported.

Hawaii’s jobless had been flat at 6 percent in May and June before inching up last month. The last time Hawaii’s unemployment rate rose was in June 2007 when it increased to 7 percent from 6.9 percent in May.

The July unemployment rate tied Hawaii with Virginia for ninth lowest rate in the country, according to the BLS report.
