Angelea Maldonado, 21, of Kona, was charged Thursday with shoplifting.

A Kona man who was stopped for shoplifting Tuesday in Hilo tried to identify himself using the name of a man he had just kidnapped, Hawaii island police said.

Dane Frank Kendrick, 29, was charged Thursday with shoplifting, first-degree terroristic threatening, kidnapping, and third-degree promoting a dangerous drug. He remained in police custody at Hilo Medical Center for an undisclosed condition; his bail was set at $71,000.

Kendrick’s alleged accomplice in the shoplifting, Angelea Maldonado, 21, of Kona, was charged with shoplifting at 3:45 p.m. Thursday. She was released after posting $250 bail.

Police said Kendrick and Maldonado entered a 23-year-old Volcano man’s home and demanded drugs Tuesday. Kendrick allegedly wielded a bladed weapon and forced the Volcano man into a vehicle and then drove him to a store on Makaala Street.

When Kendrick and Maldonado got out, the victim, who was not injured, left and called police.

Shortly after 3 p.m., store security stopped Kendrick and Maldonado for shoplifting and called police.

Responding officers found out Kendrick was using the victim’s name when the Volcano man came forward at the store and said he was the person whose name Kendrick was using.
