Bobbitt records triple-double in UH basketball win

Hawaii point guard Roderick Bobbitt recorded the second triple-double in program history as the Rainbow Warriors overpowered Hawaii Hilo 89-71 on Wednesday night at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Bobbitt broke the program’s single-game steals record with 10 and had 12 points and 10 assists.

Sophomore forward Aaron Valdes recorded a career-best 31 points in the win. Garrett Nevels scored 14, Isaac Fleming and Roderick Bobbitt scored 12 apiece and Quincy Smith added 11.

The the previous steals record was held by Tony Webster against Air Force in 1983. The only other triple-double in program history was accomplished by Reggie Carter against Yale in 1975.

UH forced 25 turnovers, including 19 steals. That was one off the team steals record.

UH improved to 3-1 heading into its matchup against Pittsburgh on Friday at Maui’s War Memorial Gymnasium.

Forward Tre Johnson led Hilo (1-2) with 25 points and 10 rebounds.

The Rainbow Warriors led wire to wire but by just nine at halftime, and saw the lead trimmed to seven near the start of the second half. But they went small with the 6-foot-5 Valdes at center and blew open the game in transition. UH saw its lead increase to as many as 23 points.

A crowd of just 1,966 was on hand as UH improved to 7-0 all-time in official games against its Division II sister school.
