UC Santa Barbara earns first Big West series win over Hawaii

Shane Bieber completed a masterful weekend of pitching by the UC Santa Barbara pitching staff, throwing a seven-hit shutout in a 5-0 victory over Hawaii on Sunday to win the series at Les Murakami Stadium.

The eighth-ranked Gauchos (31-10, 7-4 Big West) held Hawaii (15-26, 6-9) to one run in 26 innings to win a series against the Rainbow Warriors for the first time as Big West opponents.

UCSB used only four pitches the entire series with its starters combining to throw 24 innings with two walks and 18 strikeouts.

Cameron Newell had three hits and scored a run and Clay Fisher hit a two-run double in the fourth inning off Hawaii starter Jarrett Arakawa.

Arakawa (2-3) allowed nine hits and four runs in 3 1/3 innings with no walks and two strikeouts in the loss.

Bieber (6-3) struck out five without walking a batter.

Matt LoCoco, filling in for Hawaii sophomore Marcus Doi, who was scratched from the lineup with a wrist injury, had two hits, including a double.

The Gauchos are one of five teams within three games of the Big West Conference lead.

Hawaii will play nine of its final 12 games on the road, beginning with a six-game trip at Long Beach State and UC Riverside beginning Friday.
