HILO >> Pidgin and Hawaiian Pidgin are included among the U.S. Census Bureau’s list of over 100 island languages.

The Hawaii Tribune-Herald reports about 1,600 island residents who were surveyed said they spoke Pidgin or Hawaiian Pidgin, also known as American Creole English.

Pidgin emerged as a common language among the ethnically diverse population of sugar plantation workers. The language has continued to be spoken in Hawaii for over a century.

The Census released the language listing earlier this month.
