Moped rider dies after crashing into pickup truck in Kalihi

The moped rider crashed into the Ford F-150 in the 1530 block of Hala Drive about 8 a.m., police said.
A 43-year-old moped rider died today after rear-ending a pickup in Kalihi, police said.
The moped rider crashed into the Ford F-150 in the 1530 block of Hala Drive about 8 a.m., police said.
The driver of the truck, a 58-year-old Kalihi man, had reversed his truck out of a driveway and left it in the road to close his gate. The moped rider struck the truck after the driver got back in, police said.
The moped rider died at the scene.
It was the 26th traffic fatality on Oahu this year compared to 27 at this time last year.

So it is okay to leave an unattended vehicle in the road? Owner must have thought okay so anyone can just go around it? Problem is oftentimes it is hard to distinguish if car is moving or not.

Why do you think there are accidents caused by a stalled car by someone rear-ending it?
Mail trucks do it all the time. This was a residential area 4 lanes wide on Google map. And I also ride a moped.
Owner should have backed the truck out far enough to close the gate instead of onto the street. If the truck was not on the street, this tragedy would not have happened.

Condolences to Family and Friends. I am quite familiar with Hala Drive and took the route from Kamehameha Shopping Center area and made my way all the way to Pali Hwy and onto H-1. It is not a major through fare and is in a rather congested neighborhood, hence you slow down regardless of what you’re driving / riding. I believe the speed limit is 25 mph. Hence without details, but knowing the area, perhaps speed was a contributing factor. 25 mph is rather safe speed in a vehicle and two wheeler in this neighborhood.

Called countless times to Kalihi city – Mizuno’s office- their response, “Call 911”. By the time the cops get there , the illegal mopeds are long gone without a trace – only their stink entrails lingering- along with waking up the whole neighborhood with their loud-irritating -lawnmower noises.
Honolulu City Council members finally passed an ordinance on illegal modified MOPED mufflers that was already in the rules/regulations, but wasn’t enforced by local Kalihi police.
You see, when one modifies their ‘ride’ they also violate their original factory specifications. In other words, go much faster than the 25mph speed that’s intended.
Even with rules, speed is a factor, as these illegal MOPEDs still race on HALA drive.
The police need to slow the traffic down on HALA DR.. Post police from 6:30am-10:30pm and I guarantee that you’ll find many offenders.
I hope MIZUNO is listening -as his re-election is coming up at the end of this year. DO SOMETHING, instead of taking credit for road repairs.
