Wahine hoops drops tight game at Cal Poly

The Hawaii women’s basketball team had its chances at a Big West winning streak but instead fell 52-50 in a heartbreaker at Cal Poly tonight.

Sarah Toeaina scored 13 points and Julissa Tago added 11 for the eighth-place Rainbow Wahine (9-13, 2-7 BWC).

Dynn Leaupepe led the Mustangs (12-8, 6-2) with 26 points on 13-for-26 shooting, while her twin, Lynn, had nine points and 10 rebounds.

Tia Kanoa’s desperation 3 with a second left was off the mark. Lynn Leaupepe had the go-ahead basket and free throw with 38 seconds left and Kelly Wong added another foul shot for the Mustangs with four seconds left.

UH, which trailed 22-20 at halftime, went on an 8-0 run bridging the third and fourth quarters to take a momentary four-point lead. It led for the last time on Kenna Woodfolk’s basket with 1:04 remaining.

The Wahine committed 26 turnovers to the Mustangs’ 13, resulting in a 24-3 Cal Poly advantage in points off turnovers. Cal Poly had 14 steals.

The Wahine continue play at UC Santa Barbara on Saturday.
