The University of Hawaii at Manoa is ranked No. 302 in the 2019 QS World University Ranking (QSWUR) by London-based Quacquarelli Symonds, according to the university in a news release today.

That’s 39 notches above where it was last year, at No. 341, according to the university.

The QSWUR, which ranks the top 800 universities in the world, is the ranking most often used and referenced by international students, according to educational consulting company Hobsons. Universities are evaluated according to six metrics which include academic reputation, employer reputation, faculty/student ratio, citations per faculty, international faculty ratio and international student ratio.

The improvement comes on the heels of UH-Manoa’s rise to No. 306, compared to No. 446 last year, from the Center for World University Rankings’ review of 18,000 universities.

“We’re proud of this additional objective assessment of our continuing improvement as indicated by these international rankings,” said interim chancellor David Lassner in a news release. “And we’re excited about the message it sends to our students and the entire community about UH Manoa being one of the world’s great universities. The QSWUR specifically seeks feedback from employers of our graduates, which is an important consideration for our students and their parents in today’s complex and dynamic economy.”

The QSWUR ranked the Massachusetts Institute of Technology No. 1, followed by Stanford University at No. 2, and Harvard University at No. 3.
