A former Maui police officer, who pleaded guilty to fourth-degree sexual assault for groping a female police sergeant without consent, was sentenced to a year of probation.

Judge Peter Cahill sentenced on Tuesday Stephen Orikasa, adding special conditions that he must follow, including not contacting or attempting to contact the sergeant.

The judge also prohibited Orikasa from contacting or fraternizing with any police officers. He also must undergo mental health treatment until clinically discharged.

The sergeant had been under his command at the time of the offenses — between June 16, 2017, and June 30, 2017.

Orikasa pleaded guilty on July 25 to the misdemeanor charge for admittedly grabbing the sergeant’s buttocks while at work.

The deputy prosecutor in the case said the sergeant, 47, and her unit were moved to another police station and she was later moved to another job in the department, the Maui News reported.

Orikasa, 49, was the commander of the department’s Criminal Investigation Division where the sergeant was working at the time of the criminal complaint, and he resigned in July after 27 years with the department, The Maui News reported.
