A 34-year-old Hilo man died today after sustaining injuries in a two-vehicle crash in Mountain View.

The crash occurred around 6:44 a.m. on Highway 11 near the Glenwood Transfer Station. Police said Jonathan Hara was driving south in a 2000 Honda sedan when he attempted to pass a vehicle headed in the same direction and slammed into an oncoming 2011 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck operated by a 60-year-old Pahala man.

Hara was transported to Hilo Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 7:52 a.m., police said.

The Toyota Tacoma driver and two female passengers, age 59 and 25, suffered nonlife-threatening injuries and were transported to the hospital.

There have been 11 traffic-related fatalities on Hawaii island this year compared to 13 at the same time last year.
