The Honolulu Police Department Specialized Services Division today responded and arrested a man who had barricaded himself at a Aikahi Gardens hom in Kailua.

Honolulu police arrested a man this afternoon for allegedly barricading himself with his partner and a child at their Aikahi Gardens home in Kailua along Kaneohe Bay Drive.

The Honolulu Police Department’s Deputy Chief John McCarthy said the suspect held his girlfriend and a child hostage for a couple of hours. The girlfriend and child managed to leave the building, but the man continued to barricade himself.

“He just surrendered a little while ago,” McCarthy said just after 2 p.m.

Police had closed a section of Kaneohe Bay Drive between Lale Street and the H-3 freeway for over three hours during the incident.

McCarthy said there were no injuries, but he wasn’t sure if weapons were involved. HPD’s Specialized Services Division, which is consists of its SWAT Team, Bomb Unit, Canine Unit and Helicopter Section, was at the scene.

In a separate incident in January, police shot an escaped work furlough inmate at Aikahi Gardens after they struggled over possession of a gun.

The inmate was shot by two officers a total of four or five times, HPD said, and later died of his wounds.

He was serving time at the Laumaka Work Furlough Center for first-degree burglary. He had pass privileges but failed to return to the center as scheduled.
