Minor magnitude 3.8 earthquake shakes Waimea

This USGS map shows the location of this morning’s magnitude 3.8 earthquake on the Big Island.
A magnitude 3.8 earthquake struck about nine miles southeast of Waimea on Hawaii island at about 9:30 a.m. today, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The USGS considers a 3.8-magnitude earthquake “minor” because even though it can be felt and can shake objects inside buildings, they rarely cause damage. The quake was initially reported as magnitude 3.7 but was later upgraded by the USGS.
Within about 15 minutes of the quake, about 130 responded to the USGS “Did you feel it?” online survey from throughout the island.
