Haiku man, 28, dies from injuries in Maui crash

A 28-year-old Haiku man has died from injuries he sustained in a two-vehicle collision Sunday on Maui.

He was identified as Matthew Perreira, Maui police said.

The crash occurred at the intersection of Daily Road and Hukilike Street in Kahului just before 11:50 a.m.

Police said a Chevrolet pickup truck driven by a 42-year-old Waiehu man was traveling northeast on Hukilike Street and attempted to execute a left turn onto Dairy Road when it collided with a Harley Davidson motorcycle operated by Perreira.

The motorcycle was traveling southwest on Dairy Road at the time of the crash. Perreira suffered critical injuries and was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center, where he died Tuesday.

The pickup driver was not injured.

This is the eighth traffic-related fatality in Maui County compared to 22 at the same time last year.
