On the Scene

For Friday, July 23, 2010

By John Berger

Life imitated art as the Wonder Girls -- Sohee, left, Yenny, Sun, Yubin and Lim -- prepared for a meet-and-greet with their loyal fans before their first Hawaii concert last Friday at Pipeline Cafe. The backdrop is the cover of their American CD, “2 Different Tears,” and the Girls included all the songs from the CD and their popular Pussycat Dolls tribute, “Don’t Cha,” in their impressive concert.
Anita Evans went backstage during intermission at Willie K’s sold-out “Ke Kani o ke Kai” concert July 15 at the Waikiki Aquarium. Willie’s version of U2’s 1987 hit, “With or Without You,” which he performed playing ukulele instead of guitar, was one of the surprises in a memorable one-man show.
Takeo Kobayashi, left, and Eric Chandler co-hosted an intimate send-off/preview party for Miss Hawaii Teen USA Julianne Chu Saturday afternoon at their Chinatown studio. Chu modeled outfits she’s wearing in the Bahamas this week, and the gowns she’ll be wearing in the Miss Teen USA pageant tonight and tomorrow night.
Jay Larrin, left, talked with Regina Kawananakoa and Jeff Apaka at her combination birthday party and housewarming Saturday at her East Honolulu residence. Larrin’s housewarming gift was a poem, “The House of My Dreams,” which he said she inspired when she told him recently that she had bought the house sight unseen. Larrin said some of the words came to him “sight unseen” as well, although several people commented the house does indeed have “dancing trees” when the wind is blowing.
Valerie Joseph held the cake as Russell Tanoue, left, celebrated his birthday with congratulations from Kim Taylor Reece Saturday evening at the Pacific Club. The theme of the party was “black and gold,” and guests were given gold Mardi Gras beads. Reece ended up with several strands of them.
