Island Movers open season

The Hawaii Island Movers host the Paradise All-Stars in a 1 p.m. doubleheader this afternoon at Les Murakami Stadium, part of the summer baseball team’s 26th season.

The team leaves tomorrow for a three-week goodwill tour of Japan that includes games against Tokyo Big Six, Meiji, Waseda and Hosei.

The team is composed of college-age players from Hawaii with a few from the mainland and Japan. Players include former ‘Iolani star Jarrett Arakawa, Jeremy Fujimoto (Santa Clara), Kevin Fujii (Hawaii), Kainoa Crowell (Washington) and Ryan Muraoka (Hawaii Pacific).

The Movers return to host Kansai Big 6 on July 24 at 3 p.m. The season concludes with the Hawaii International Baseball Tournament on Aug. 5-8 featuring Hiroshima Big Six, Kansai and Hokusho.

Kaufman, James featured at QB Club

NCAA high jump champion Amber Kaufman of Hawaii and Carmyn James, the Rainbow Wahine track and field coach, headline the program at tomorrow’s Honolulu Quarterback Club luncheon at Maple Garden Restaurant.

Also scheduled to speak are Chris Hart and Gary Dickman, "The Sports Animals" from ESPN 1420 Radio.

Lunch costs $15 and begins at 11:30 a.m. The program follows at noon.

Leahi advances in regional

Tara Tesoro scored the only goal at the 22nd-minute mark to lead Leahi 97 over Mustang Mavericks of Northern California 1-0 in yesterday’s semifinals of the girls Under-13 US Youth Soccer Region IV Championships in Bernalillo, N.M.

Leahi advances to today’s championship against San Diego Surf. Surf eliminated Seneno of Arizona 1-0 yesterday.

Leahi 97 is the only remaining Hawaii team in the competition. Today’s winner advances to next month’s USYS national tournament in Overland Park, Kan.

Volleyball ticket renewal by tomorrow

The deadline for season-ticket renewals for Hawaii women’s volleyball is tomorrow.

Season-ticket holders can renew online at www.etickethawaii.com, by fax (808-956-3403) or by mail. The Rainbow Wahine, who advanced to the national semifinals last season, open against San Diego on Aug. 27 in the Chevron Invitational, which includes Kansas State and UCLA.

Lute Olson headlines hoops camps

Former Arizona men’s basketball coach Lute Olson is among the staff at this week’s Channing Frye & Friends Summer Basketball Camps.

Also on staff are Frye, who plays for the Phoenix Suns, and Al Jefferson from the Minnesota Timberwolves. Frye’s foundation, the Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii and Spalding Clubhouse are co-sponsors of the sessions that will be held Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Participants entering grades 3 through 8 will be at Manoa Valley District Park Gym, while those entering grades 9 through 12 will be at McKinley High. The cost is $10 per day.

Women’s summer league opens

The 2010 D.One NCAA Women’s Summer Basketball League, the only NCAA-certified women’s summer league in Hawaii, opens its fifth season Tuesday at Kamehameha School’s Kekuhaupi’o Gym.

The league features former and current collegiate players, including Nani Cockett, Brandy Richardson, Dita Liepkalne, Keisha Kanekoa and Kyla Evers.

Games are Tuesday nights at 6:30, 7:30, and 8:30 and Saturday nights at 6, 7 and 8 through the end of next month. There is no admission charge.

Unbeaten U.S. cruises into showdown with Australia

CARACAS, Venezuela >> Lauren Lappin had three hits and four RBIs and Jennie Finch picked up the victory as the United States beat Botswana 21-0 in a game that was stopped after three innings yesterday at the world softball championships.

The Americans (4-0) should have a tougher time in today’s pool-play game against Australia (2-1). Australia, which features one current (Kaia Parnaby) and three former (Stacey Porter, Justine Smethurst and Clare Warwick) members of the Hawaii softball team, shut out the Czech Republic 6-0 yesterday, highlighted by Porter’s solo home run.

Scott, Wong advance to AVP beach semifinals

BELMAR, N.J. >> Punahou graduates Sean Scott and Kevin Wong advanced with their respective teammates to today’s semifinals of the AVP Nivea Belmar Open pro beach volleyball tournament.

Scott, who played for Hawaii in the 1990s, and John Hyden are seeded second. They defeated Jeff Nygaard and Matt Olson 21-14, 21-19 yesterday to advance to a semifinal against the sixth-seeded Wong and Casey Patterson. Wong-Patterson eliminated former UH player Eyal Zimet and Mike Morrison in yesterday’s quarterfinal, 21-15, 17-21, 23-21.

In the women’s bracket, top seeds Jennifer Kessy and April Ross advanced to the semifinals by beating Brooke Hanson and Lisa Rutledge. Kessy-Ross will meet Scott’s wife, Rachel, and her partner Elaine Youngs today. The other semifinal pits Nicole Branagh and Misty May-Treanor against Angie Akers and Tyra Turner.

Phelps finishes first, last at Paris Open

PARIS >> Michael Phelps easily won the 200-meter butterfly at the Paris Open yesterday before ending the first day of the meet by finishing last in the 100-meter freestyle.

Phelps led from the start of the 200 butterfly, finishing in 1 minute, 55.70 seconds. Christophe Lebon edged fellow Frenchman Jordan Coelho to finish second in 1:59.01.

Phelps swam in the 100 freestyle final about half an hour later and finished eighth. Frenchman Fabien Gilot won in 48.65.

Jones takes another hurdles title

DES MOINES, Iowa >> Hometown favorite Lolo Jones cruised to the 100-meter hurdles title at the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships yesterday, winning her second outdoor national title in 12.69 seconds on a scorching afternoon in Iowa.

Jeremy Wariner, the favorite in the 400, collapsed halfway through the finals with a hip flexor injury. He was helped off the track as Greg Nixon won in 44.61.

Chaunte Lowe broke her own American record in the high jump, leaping 6 feet, 8- 3/4 inches. Hawaii’s Amber Kaufman decided at the last minute not to attend the meet.
