UH volleyball gets recruit

Tai Manu-Olevao, a 6-foot junior outside hitter for Punahou School, has given her oral commit to play volleyball for Hawaii in 2012.

Buffanblu varsity coach Peter Balding confirmed the commitment to the Star-Advertiser yesterday.

"I think it’s a good match for Hawaii, a good match for Tai," Balding said. "Any time Dave (UH coach Shoji) has the ability to get a top athlete to stay home, it’s a feather in his cap, a good situation for the player. It’s a win-win situation."

Shoji cannot discuss a recruit until receiving a national letter of intent. Manu-Olevao can sign in November 2011, during her senior year.

Manu-Olevao has been on the Buffanblu varsity since her freshman year and had a match-high 24 kills in the state championship loss to Kamehameha. The all-state and all-league selection trained this summer with the U.S. National Youth Team.

AARP hosting wellness clinics

AARP Hawaii is inviting the public to free workshops designed to promote physical wellness and answer questions about health reform.

There will be a session on the new health care laws, focused on those between the ages of 50-64. It will be run by AARP national legislative expert Greg Wang. There will also be information on AARP’s free 10-week Walking Program and an introduction to the basic movements of Tai Chi for Health, a program shown to improve balance and reduce the risk of falling as people age.

Two upcoming workshops are on Oahu, with the next on Monday at Manoa Grand Ballroom in Honolulu and the last on Tuesday at Camp Kokokahi, Atherton Hall in Kaneohe.

On the neighbor islands, there will be workshops today at the Kaunoa Senior Center in Paia, Maui; Wednesday at the Kauai War Memorial Exhibition Hall in Lihue; and Thursday at Hilo Naniloa Volcanoes Resort (Pali Room).

All run from 9-11:30 a.m.

To register, call 877-926-8300. For more information, call 545-6003 on Oahu.
