Hawaii drops to No. 6 in AVCA poll
Despite winning twice last week, Hawaii dropped a spot to No. 6 in yesterday’s AVCA Coaches Top 25 women’s volleyball poll.
The Rainbow Wahine improved to 12-1 after sweeping Utah State and Nevada last week.
The unanimous No. 1 choice was Stanford (11-0). Florida (10-1) moved up a place to No. 2, followed by Nebraska (12-1). Penn State (11-2) fell two spots to No. 4, while USC (12-0) swapped spots with Hawaii, coming in at No. 5.
Rounding out the top 10 were Illinois (10-2), California (12-0), Iowa State (10-2) and Washington (12-1).
Wahine in fourth at tourney
Hawaii sophomore Ka’ili Britos is in second place at the Rose City Collegiate golf tournament after shooting an even-par 144 in two rounds yesterday in Aurora, Ore.
Britos is one shot behind leader Whitney French of Oregon State going into the final round.
North Texas leads the team standings at 598 and Hawaii is in fourth at 602.
Vulcans’ Cabico sits in tie for fifth
Hawaii-Hilo’s Neil Cabico is in fifth place at 2-under 142 in the Western Washington/Viking Invitational at Bellingham, Wash.
Cabico is seven shots behind leader Brian Barhonovich of Western Washington going into the final round.
Western Washington and Cal State Monterey Bay are tied for the team lead at 576. Hawaii-Hilo is tied for seventh place at 584.
BYUH topples Academy of Art
Natasha Aiono scored two goals and Lauran Wang, Emily Mearns and Kaci McNeil scored one each as Brigham Young-Hawaii beat Academy of Art 5-0 in women’s soccer yesterday in Laie.
The Seasiders improved to 4-0-1 and 3-0 in the Pacific West Conference. The Urban Knights dropped to 1-5 and 0-5.
Urban Knights win men’s match
Andrew Cruz scored in the 27th minute to give Academy of Art a 1-0 men’s soccer win over BYUH in Laie.
The Urban Knights improved to 2-6 and 1-4 in the PacWest. The Seasiders dropped to 2-3 and 1-2.
Hester places ninth in coed sailing
Hawaii coed sailor Zachary Hester placed ninth in the PCCSC Singlehanded Championships in Long Beach, Calif., on Sunday.
Hester was one of four UH sailors competing at the event.
