Kim, Miyajima advance

Hawaii’s Kimberly Kim and Shayna Miyajima struggled in the final round of the LPGA Sectional Qualifier yesterday, but still advanced to the Final Qualifying Tournament.

Kim, who won the 2006 U.S. Women’s Amateur at age 14, had a share of the lead going into the final day on the Bobcat Course at Plantation Golf & Country Club. A final-round 77 dropped her into 13th, at 1-over-par 289, in Venice, Fla.

Miyajima, a Baldwin graduate who has been playing the Futures Tour, grabbed one of the final slots. She tied for 30th at 79–297. The top 30 and ties advanced.

Medalist was Futures player Lucy Nunn, from Oklahoma, at 70–282.

The LPGA’s Final Qualifying Tournament is Dec. 8-12 in Daytona Beach, Fla. Honolulu’s Ayaka Kaneko qualified last month.

Sectional qualifiers will be joined at the final stage by current LPGA Tour members attempting to improve their status for 2011, along with players finishing Nos. 6-10, and the next top 10 players on the 2010 Futures Tour money list.

Vulcans fall in 2 OTs

Vilmundur Sveinsson popped a shot over Hawaii-Hilo goalie Alex Para 93 seconds into the second overtime to lift visiting Academy of Art to a 3-2 win in a PacWest men’s soccer match yesterday.

The Vulcans (3-4-1, 2-3-1 PacWest) led 2-0 13 minutes into the first half on goals by Christian Soto and Robin Furuya. The Urban Knights (4-6, 2-4) closed to 2-1 before halftime on Richard Luna’s penalty kick and Patrick Heinemann tied it 10 minutes into the second half on a cross from Andrew Cruz.

» In the following women’s match, Hawaii-Hilo got goals from four different players to shut out Academy of Art 4-0.

Emily Lambert opened the scoring for the Vulcans (3-6-1, 2-4 PacWest) 37 minutes into the match and Shea Nakamoto added a goal 3 minutes later for a 2-0 halftime lead. Lauren Minami made it 3-0 90 seconds into the second half and Analysa Rodriguez capped the scoring with an unassisted goal in the 68th minute against the Urban Knights (1-7-1, 0-7).

Sea Warriors sweep Seasiders

Kelly Balanay put down 13 kills and Natasha Bell added 11 as Hawaii Pacific handed Brigham Young-Hawaii its first PacWest volleyball loss in 90 minutes last night, 25-22, 25-17, 25-21, at St. Andrew’s Priory Gym.

Bell had half of the team’s six aces as well as 12 digs, and Kyra Pelayo had a match-high 20 digs for the Sea Warriors (8-2, 2-1 PacWest).

Julia Becker had 10 kills to lead the Seasiders (5-5, 2-1).
