Jabour makes quarters in Bali

Kiron Jabour defeated fellow Hawaii surfer Alex Smith in a fourth-round heat at the Oakley World Pro Junior in Bali, Indonesia yesterday.

Jabour scored a two-wave total of 18.16 to beat Smith, who scored 16.70.

Another Hawaii surfer, Granger Larsen, lost in the fourth round of the ASP Junior World Tour event. Dale Staples beat Larsen 16.07 to 15.46.

Jabour will meet Mitch Crews of Australia in the quarterfinals.

Hawaii’s Malia Manuel is awaiting her quarterfinal match against Sage Erickson in the World Pro Junior Girls event.

 

Sea Warriors top Urban Knights

Sanoe Recca put down 15 kills and Natasha Bell 14 as Hawaii Pacific defeated Academy of Art in a Pacific West Conference volleyball match last night in San Francisco 25-17, 25-23, 25-27, 25-23.

The Lady Sea Warriors (9-2, 3-1 PacWest) also got a career-high 10 blocks from Kelly Balanay and double-digit digs from four players: Bell (16), Tricia Yoshimura (15), Kyra Pelayo (11) and Recca (10). Dan Yang had a match-high 21 kills for the Urban Knights (9-6, 5-1), who also got 22 digs from ‘Iolani graduate Leinani Keanini.

 

Hawaii Pacific wins 2 in soccer

Hawaii Pacific avenged its lone league loss yesterday, shutting out Grand Canyon 2-0 yesterday in a Pacific West Conference men’s soccer match in Phoenix.

The Sea Warriors (7-2, 6-1 PacWest) had lost to the Antelopes (8-1-2, 7-1) on Monday, 2-1.

Chance Bukoski scored in the 33rd minute and Nate Scott scored on a penalty kick in the 89th minute in HPU’s first-ever road win over GCU.

 

HPU tops Grand Canyon in women’s match

In the women’s match, Megan Fuller scored in the eighth minute of overtime to lift HPU over Grand Canyon 2-1.

Kaua Wall gave the Sea Warriors (3-7, 3-4) a 1-0 lead in the 30th minute.

The Antelopes (7-3-1, 5-2-1) tied it in the 47th minute on a goal by Jessica Scarpati.

 

Komoto wins a spot on Asia Pacific Jr. Cup team

Kacie Komoto clinched a place on her first Asia Pacific Junior Cup team Sunday, winning the girls division of the fourth annual Kaanapali Resort HSJGA Match Play Championship at the resort’s Kai Course.

The match-play field was made up of point leaders from previous Hawaii State Junior Golf Association events. The tournament was the final qualifier for this year’s Asia Pacific (formerly USA Hawaii Japan) Junior Cup team. Komoto was the top point-getter among the girls going into match play.

The Cup will be played Nov. 11-14 at the Waikoloa Kings’ course on the Big Island, with 16 Hawaii juniors taking on 16 Asia-Pacific juniors in a Ryder Cup format.

Komoto defeated Punahou teammate Alina Ching 2 and 1 in the girls final. In semifinals, Komoto beat Alice Kim 2 up, and Ching got by Eimi Koga 1 up. Kim ousted 12-year-old Allisen Corpuz in the second round.

In the Boys 15-18 division, Maui Interscholastic League champ Alex Chiarella held off 2009 state champ Lorens Chan 1 up. Chiarella was 3 up after 12.

Jino Sohn captured the Boys 13-14 division with a 2-up win over Justin Kurihara. Both finalists are from Honolulu.

 

LPGA players to assist with clinic

LPGA pros Kim Welch, Anna Grzebien and Angela Jerman will assist at a 2-hour golf clinic at Kaanapali on Oct. 19. The free clinic is part of the Aloha Team Classic, which benefits Beyond the Rainbow Foundation.

The previous four Classics raised more than $50,000, which has been granted to nonprofit organizations that support Maui youth.

The Aloha Team Classic will be Oct. 17-20. There are amateur spots open for both the entire four-day event as well as limited spots available for those wanting to play one day with LPGA players (Oct. 19 or 20).
