UH opens fall season with sweep

Hawaii pitcher Stephanie Ricketts tossed a one-hit shutout in a 10-0 win over Christian Brothers in the first game of an exhibition doubleheader yesterday at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

Melissa Gonzalez went 3-for-3 and drove in two runs in the opener of UH’s fall schedule. Jazmine Zamora and Alex Aguirre homered in UH’s six-run fourth inning. Ricketts struck out six and walked one in the game shortened to five innings.

In the second game, UH sophomore Kaia Parnaby struck out nine in a complete-game one-hitter in a 3-0 win. Shortstop Jessica Iwata went 3-for-4 in the finale. Catcher Ashley Smith went 2-for-2 with an RBI.

UH continues the fall season against Chaminade, Nov. 5-6.

UH golf team finishes 16th

Hawaii sophomore Cory Oride matched a career best by shooting a 70 yesterday in the Alister MacKenzie Invitational in Fairfax, Calif.

Oride led the Warriors with a three-round total of 214 to finish tied for 45th. UH shot 284 yesterday to finish 16th as a team at 11-over 863. Junior T.J. Kua tied for 50th at 215 and Jared Sawada was another eight strokes back.

Oregon’s Sean Maekawa, a Honokaa graduate, tied for 11th at 7-under 206. ‘Iolani graduate David Fink finished at even-par 213 for Oregon State.

Bersamin leads Vulcans to win

Hawaii-Hilo sophomore Dayna Bersamin finished eight strokes ahead of the field to lead the Vulcans to the team title at the Culturame Women’s Golf Classic last Saturday in North Plains, Ore.

Bersamin, a Baldwin graduate, finished with a two-day score of 4-over-par 148 to claim medalist honors at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Course last Saturday. The Vulcans placed three golfers in the top five to finish 29 strokes ahead of runner-up George Fox.

Hawaii-Hilo’s Randi Ono and Pacific’s Valerie Kitamori, a Waiakea graduate, were part of a three-way tie for second at 156. Nicole Aoki placed fifth at 158 for the Vulcans.

BYUH fourth in cross country poll

Brigham Young-Hawaii moved up two spots yesterday to No. 7 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Division II poll and retained the No. 1 spot in the West Region.

» Brigham Young-Hawaii remained fourth in the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association West Region Division II poll this week. The Seasiders men’s team ranked ninth in the region.
