Viloria returns to ring
Former IBF and WBC light flyweight champion Brian Viloria returns to the ring next Friday in the Philippines to continue his quest for a third world title.
Viloria (27-3, 15 KOs) will take on Thailand’s Liempetch Sor Veerapol (19-7-1, 12 KOs) at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City, Philippines.
The former Waipahu resident is the WBO’s No. 1-ranked challenger at 112 pounds, and an impressive victory over Veerapol should earn him a title shot against champion Julio Cesar Miranda in early 2011.
Friday’s fight is Viloria’s second at 112 pounds since losing the IBF light flyweight title to Carlos Tamara in January. Viloria beat Omar Soto by split decision in July.

Everyday athlete
» Lorenn Walker, 58
» Triathlete
» Workout: Something every day, including a one-hour daily run and 40-minute swim several times weekly. Also mountain biking, surfing and windsurfing.
Attorney, public health educator and author. That’s Lorenn Walker’s personal work triathlon.
But the longtime Waialua resident prefers the triathlons that take place outdoors, particularly the XTERRA off-road championship. Walker was 367th in last Sunday’s event on Maui — third in her age group — when completing her 12th XTERRA in 4 hours, 19 minutes and 44 seconds.
"It’s such a fun race," she said. "We often get complacent with training so you’ve got to have stuff to look forward to, like this race.
"You get to ride where you don’t normally ride, see Molokini. … It’s my favorite race."
Walker originally came to Hawaii to surf. She branched out to other sports, winning the Hawaii state women’s windsurfing championship in 1999 at age 47. After finishing her first Ironman at age 50, Walker became the first female over 40 to do "The Double".
The former state deputy attorney general believes in healthy eating (bakes own organic bread, touts quinoa) and LSD (long, slow distance) training. Walker’s been working with former triathlete John Henderson, who was left a paraplegic after being hit by a tour bus while cycling in 2008.
"I’m stoked to train harder for 2011," she said. "We’re primates, we’re supposed to move. That’s why I do something every day."
The title of her book says it all: "Aging with Strength."
