BYUH stays alive in volleyball

Brigham Young-Hawaii prevented Hawaii-Hilo from clinching the PacWest volleyball title outright last night, as the Seasiders topped the Vulcans 17-25, 25-16, 25-15, 28-26 at Cannon Activities Center.

Hawaii-Hilo (18-4, 13-2) needs to beat Hawaii Pacific tonight to claim the conference crown. BYU-Hawaii (15-7, 11-4) could share in the title with a win at Chaminade and a loss by UHH.

Chaminade drops Western Oregon

Mamadou Diarra scored 18 points, grabbed 21 rebounds and blocked six shots to lead Chaminade over Western Oregon 77-66 in the opener of the GNAC/PacWest Challenge men’s basketball tournament in Lacey, Wash.

Steven Bennett added 14 points and eight assists for the Silverswords in the season opener for both teams.

» In the second tournament game at Marcus Pavilion, host St. Martin’s spoiled the season opener for Hawaii-Hilo, topping the Vulcans 78-61.

» In the non-tournament women’s contest, Kirsty Imai scored 18 points, hitting all five of Hawaii-Hilo’s 3-pointers, but it wasn’t enough as the Vulcans dropped their season opener to host St. Martin’s 64-55.
