Warriors sixth in preseason poll

The Hawaii men’s volleyball team was picked to finish sixth in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation coaches preseason poll.

UH was the only team among the top seven that did not receive a first-place vote.

UC Irvine and USC tied for the top spot, each receiving three votes. Defending NCAA champion Stanford, with two votes, was third, followed by Pepperdine (1 vote) and Brigham Young (2) and UCLA (1) was seventh.

The Warriors open the season with the 17th Outrigger Invitational, Jan. 13-15, at the Stan Sheriff Center. The field includes Ball State, Penn State and UCLA.

 

Waialae’s Carll, Chun win tourney

Waialae Country Club head professional Kevin Carll and assistant pro Mark Chun beat 22 other teams to win the E-Z-GO/Golf Concepts Aloha Section Facility Team Championship on Tuesday at Hualalai Golf Club.

Carll and Chun shot the tournament’s low round with a 7-under 65 in Monday’s first round and secured the win with a 5-under 67 for a two-round total of 132.

The winners split the $2,500 top prize.

Oahu Country Club’s Andrew Feldmann and Shane Abe finished two strokes back and will split the $1,750 second-place prize.
