Gun-wielding bandit needs to be collared

He has been dubbed the "backpack bandit," but it is not a sobriquet to be taken lightly. This man is brazen and dangerous.

He is the suspect in four bank robberies on Oahu this year — two in Kalihi and two at the same branch in Kunia. Each time, he has backed his demand for money by pulling a handgun from his backpack.

Police believe he is becoming bolder and fear he could turn more violent.

The man is described as 5 feet 5 inches tall and 190 pounds — and his face is on clear display in several high-resolution surveillance photos. The FBI is offering $10,000 for information leading to his capture. Let’s hope that will do the trick. Because somebody out there must know him.

Hawaii great for health, but not all here on board

Hawaii was been recognized as among America’s healthiest states for the past 20 years, and it again is among the top five, despite some setbacks, according to the United Health Foundation.

In those two decades, smoking among residents dropped from 27.6 percent to 15.3 percent. However, the percentage of children in poverty nearly doubled in the past five years, rising from 9.6 percent to 18.9 percent, and the presence of obesity broadened from 15.7 percent to 22.9 percent of residents in the past 10 years.
