MWC deal could come today

The University of Hawaii is hoping for good news today from the Mountain West Conference, whose board of directors has a scheduled meeting to consider the school’s membership.

The hope is that the MWC will offer Hawaii membership in football.

The Big West Conference met Wednesday to consider three schools for its league. An offer for UH’s remaining sports could come as soon as today as well.

 

Chaminade, BYU-Hawaii in final

Shane Hanson scored 24 points, including six 3-pointers, to lead Chaminade past Hawaii Pacific 74-56 in yesterday’s opening game of the Hawaii Challenge men’s basketball tournament at Cannon Activities Center.

The Silverswords (6-4) will take on Brigham Young-Hawaii (4-2) in tonight’s championship game at McCabe Gym. The Seasiders snapped Hawaii-Hilo’s three-game winning streak when pulling away from the Vulcans 82-69 in the second game.

Marques Whippy scored 17 points and grabbed 14 rebounds for BYUH. Jake Dastrup added 15 points, Okesene Ale 13, and Jet Chang and Rory Patterson each had 11. The Vulcans (3-2) got 24 points from Justin Smith and 10 from Andrew Gipson.
