Parker excels at All-American Bowl

Darnell Arceneaux couldn’t have been prouder.

The Saint Louis football coach saw his defensive end, Juda Parker, compile six tackles, block a field goal and sack a punter yesterday in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio, Texas.

"He had a great game and represented Hawaii so well. He played with so much heart," Arceneaux said of Parker, a 6-foot-4, 245-pound senior. "He was so in awe of how his high school career ended."

In addition to Arceneaux, Parker’s family was also in attendance. Parker, the Star-Advertiser All-State defensive player of the year, is not committed to a university.

Vercruyssen, Galdeira at QB Club

World champion trampoline gymnast Nani Vercruyssen and sportswriter Kyle Galdeira will be the featured speakers at tomorrow’s meeting of the Honolulu Quarterback Club.

Vercruyssen is a member of the U.S. Trampoline and Tumbling National Team and was named the Trampoline Sportswoman of the Year by USA Gymnastics. She won a bronze medal at the Pan American Cup last month. Galdeira is a freelance writer for many outlets, including the Star-Advertiser, MLB.com and Yahoo! Sports.

The luncheon begins at 11:30 a.m. at the Maple Garden restaurant, with the program to start at noon. The cost is $15 for members and guests.

UH drops tennis openers to Duke

The Hawaii women’s tennis team opened the spring season with a 6-1 loss to seventh-ranked Duke yesterday at the UH Tennis Complex.

The Blue Devils claimed the doubles point and took five of six singles matches. Katarina Poljakova provided UH’s lone point with a 7-5, 7-5 upset of 43rd-ranked Mary Clayton.

The UH men’s team, ranked 37th, opened its season with a 7-0 loss to No. 14 Duke. Ninth-ranked Henrique Cunha defeated UH’s Dennis Lajola 6-3,1-6, 6-2 in first singles.

UH fundraiser nets more than $30,000

The A’o A Koa Scholarship Dinner raised more than $30,000 for the University of Hawaii men’s volleyball program on Friday.

Proceeds from the event held at Honolulu Country Club will be used to defray costs associated with the UH Warrior Youth Summer Camps and help fund summer school scholarships for current Warriors players.

Former UH standout Pono Maa was also presented the Pae Makaukau Alumni recognition award.

Hawaii-Hilo routs Dominican

Hillary Hurley and Kirsty Imai each scored 13 points to lead Hawaii-Hilo to a 70-56 women’s basketball victory over Dominican yesterday in Hilo.

Hurley also had 12 rebounds for UHH (5-5, 2-1 Pacific West).

» In the men’s game that followed, Lavell Shipman scored 14 points to lead the Vulcans past the Penguins 75-53.

BYUH loses PacWest opener

Katie Zasly’s 19 points led Notre Dame de Namur to a 70-61 win over Brigham Young-Hawaii yesterday in Laie.

Richelle Rieben hit four 3-pointers and led BYUH (1-8, 0-1) with 18 points.

» In the later men’s game, Marques Whippy scored 17 points to lead the Seasiders to a 60-57 win over the Argonauts.
