UH’s Tweedt joins challenger

Hawaii tennis player Jeremy Tweedt beat Rong Ma of Brigham Young-Hawaii 6-3, 6-7 (2), 7-5 to win the Honolulu Challenger Wild Card Tournament yesterday at Central Oahu Regional Park.

Tweedt will join fellow Hawaii senior Dennis Lajola in the main draw of the tournament that begins Jan. 25. Ma earned a wild-card entry into the tournament, which includes several players ranked in the top 100 on the ATP Tour.

 

Hawaii-Hilo beats HPU on the road

Justin Smith scored twice in the final minute of overtime and the Hawaii-Hilo men’s basketball team beat Hawaii Pacific 100-95 last night at the Blaisdell Arena.

The Vulcans (12-3, 4-0 Pacific West) appeared to win it when Lavell Shipman hit a shot at the buzzer at the end of regulation, but the officials ruled he stepped on the 3-point line.

The Sea Warriors dropped to 7-9 and 2-2.

 

Early marathon entry extended

The Honolulu Marathon has extended its deadline for early entry into the race to Thursday.

The original deadline was yesterday, and 4,505 people had already signed up. Registration can be done for a $35 fee at honolulumarathon.org.
