Seasiders lose first PacWest game

In front of a national television audience, Brigham Young-Hawaii saw its perfect record in conference play go down in Phoenix in a 69-64 loss to Grand Canyon yesterday in a Pacific West Conference men’s basketball game.

The Seasiders (10-5, 5-1) got a game-high 23 points from Jet Chang and 14 from Marques Whippy. The Antelopes (10-6, 5-1) used a 10-0 run to take control at 61-54 with 3:11 remaining and GCU held off a late BYUH rally with free throws.

Hawaii Pacific tops Dominican

Royal Edwards scored a career-high 26 points and Jason Jackson added 15 as Hawaii Pacific used a 53-point second half to rally past Dominican 74-70 last night in San Rafael, Calif.

LaBrent Chappell and Nick Frazier both finished with 10 points for the Sea Warriors (10-10, 5-4), who went 21-for-26 from the free-throw line to beat the Penguins (1-17, 1-7).

Vulcans down Argonauts on road

Zach Wilde scored 20 points and Lavell Shipman came off the bench for 19 to lead Hawaii-Hilo past Notre Dame de Namur 71-60 in a PacWest men’s basketball game in Belmont, Calif., last night.

Justin Smith and Aukai Wong each added 10 points for the Vulcans (13-6, 5-3) against the Argonauts (3-15, 1-7).

Chaminade falls on road

Chaminade jumped out to a 12-0 lead, but couldn’t hold on, losing to Dixie State 70-52 yesterday in St. George, Utah.

Steven Bennett scored 14 points and Mamadou Diarra added 13 points and 11 rebounds for the Silverswords (11-7, 4-2), whose biggest lead was 29-16 with 3:18 left in the first half.

The Red Storm (11-5, 5-2) rallied to take the lead for good at 43-31 with 10:58 remaining.

Sea Warriors’ 12-game streak snapped

Jazzmin Awa-Williams scored 15 points before fouling out and Mana Hopkins added 11, but it was not enough as Hawaii Pacific saw its 12-game winning streak end last night in a 70-65 loss to Dominican in San Rafael, Calif.

The Sea Warriors (13-4, 7-1 PacWest) led 59-58 late in the second half, but the Penguins (5-13, 3-5) went on a 12-6 run over the final 3:43 to hand HPU its first conference loss.

Vulcans women rally

Natalie Mata and Phylicia Schultz both scored 14 points to lead Hawaii-Hilo to a 60-53 PacWest women’s basketball win over Notre Dame de Namur at Belmont, Calif.

Hillary Hurley added 12 points for the Vulcans (8-8, 4-4), who outscored the Argonauts (6-11, 3-5) 35-21 in the second half.

GCU drops BYU-Hawaii

No. 12 Grand Canyon kept Brigham Young-Hawaii winless in conference play yesterday, with the Antelopes topping the Seasiders 94-43.

Hi’ilea Cummings come off the bench for 12 points for BYU-Hawaii (1-14, 0-6) against GCU (17-2, 5-1).

Chaminade loses at Dixie State

Breann Hill scored 27 points to lead four Dixie State players in double figures as the No. 11 Red Storm defeated Chaminade 99-44 in St. George, Utah.

Jamie Higa scored 11 points for the Silverswords (1-12, 1-5) against Dixie State (16-1, 6-0).

Harrison, Kuznetsov advance final

Ryan Harrison and Alex Kuznetsov won semifinal matches yesterday to advance to the final in the Honolulu Challenger, a $50,000 USTA Pro Circuit tennis tournament at Patsy T. Mink Central Oahu Regional Park. The 18-year-old Harrison beat No. 1 seed Michael Russell 2-6, 6-3, 6-3.

Kuznetsov, an unseeded player, defeated No. 8 seed Jesse Witten 4-6, 6-1, 6-4.

Today’s singles final starts at 11 a.m., followed by the doubles final.

In doubles yesterday, Robert Kendrick and Kuznetsov beat Samuel Groth and Greg Jones 6-2, 6-3 to advance to play Harrison and Travis Rettenmaier in the final today.

BYUH beats Hawaii

Brigham Young-Hawaii defeated Hawaii 4-3 in women’s tennis yesterday.

The Rainbow Wahine won the doubles point by taking two out of three matches, but BYUH got wins in four of the six singles by Elle Carney, Desiree Tran, Elizaveta Ezhova and Aubrey Paul.

No. 5 Texas blanks UH men

No. 5 Texas defeated Hawaii 4-0 in a men’s tennis match yesterday in Austin, Texas.

Hinshaw at QB club meeting

Virginia Hinshaw, the University of Hawaii chancellor, will be one of the speakers at tomorrow’s meeting of the Honolulu Quarterback Club.

Other speakers include Saint Louis School athletic director Ed Paola and Crusaders football head coach Darnell Arceneaux, and Carson Peapealalo, the executive director and commissioner of the Hawaii Professional Football League.

The meeting at Maple Garden restaurant starts with lunch at 11:30 a.m., with the program starting at noon. The public is invited and the cost is $15.
