Hewitt is blocker of year

Hawaii’s Brittany Hewitt was named the CVU.com blocker of the year by College Volleyball Update.

The selection was announced yesterday.

Last fall, Hewitt led the nation in blocking (1.68 blocks per set) while also averaging 2.30 kills per set and hitting .365.

Hewitt also broke two UH rally-scoring records for hitting percentage in a match (.917 vs. New Mexico State) and blocks in a match (16 vs. San Diego).

Hawaii earned CVU.com team recognition by being named as a top-five defensive team. The Rainbow Wahine held the opposition to a .141 hitting percentage.

Pearl Open shortened to 36 holes

The 33rd Hawaii Pearl Open has been shortened to 36 holes after rain forced the cancellation of yesterday’s scheduled first round at Pearl Country Club.

Only 64 golfers of a field of 176 completed 18 holes yesterday, when play was suspended twice before organizers decided to cancel the round.

Players will start today’s round using first-round pairings and tee times. The field will be cut to the top 90 and ties for tomorrow’s final round. A minimum of 15 amateurs will advance, a tournament tradition.

BYUH women drop Chaminade

Richelle Rieben scored 24 points to lead Brigham Young-Hawaii to a 72-35 victory over Chaminade in women’s basketball last night in Laie.

Erin Dastrup added nine points and six rebounds for the Seasiders (3-15, 2-7 Pacific West).

Jordan Ahakuelo led the Silverswords (1-15, 1-9) with 12 points.

Sea Warriors defeat Vulcans

Jazzmin Awa-Williams scored 15 points to lead Hawaii Pacific to a 60-48 win over Hawaii-Hilo in women’s basketball last night in Hilo.

Courtney Buster added 10 points for the Sea Warriors (16-4, 10-1 Pacific West).

Hillary Hurley scored 19 points and Kirsty Imai added 10 for the Vulcans (9-10, 5-6).

Western New Mexico trips UHH

Western New Mexico defeated Hawaii-Hilo 8-1 in men’s tennis yesterday in Phoenix.

Emmanuel Mensah, Henning Thrien, Yair Banuelos and Johan Weich led the Mustangs with wins in both singles and doubles.

Carlos Quijano and Kallen Mizuguchi won in third doubles for the Vulcans.

Vulcans women beat Mustangs

The Hawaii-Hilo women’s tennis team beat Western New Mexico 8-1 yesterday in Phoenix.

Kelsey Daguio, Janelle Ng and Morissa Kahakui led the Vulcans with wins in both singles and doubles.

HPU knocks off Grand Canyon

Hawaii Pacific defeated Grand Canyon in women’s tennis 6-3 yesterday in Phoenix.

The Sea Warriors’ Zora Vickova, Celina Goetti and Aleksandra Stankovic earned victories in both singles and doubles.
