Hawaii ninth, Cal first in Burns
Hawaii’s men’s golf team shot an even-par 288 yesterday to move into a tie for ninth place after two rounds of the John A. Burns Intercollegiate at the Turtle Bay Resort’s Palmer Course.
California leads the tournament at 19-under-par 557, followed by Texas A&M (565). Brigham Young-Hawaii is 11th, Hawaii Pacific tied for 12th and Hawaii-Hilo 14th in the 17-team field.
Texas A&M’s Conrad Shindler shot his second straight 68 to lead individuals with an 8-under 136. The top Hawaii golfer is TJ Kua with a 2-under 142.
BYU-Hawaii, Hawaii Pacific honored
Brigham Young-Hawaii and Hawaii Pacific cross country teams have been named to the All-Academic Team by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
BYU-Hawaii’s men’s team and two of its athletes, Thomas Puzey and Matthew Gulden, were named to the team. Both HPU’s men’s and women’s teams as well as athletes Frida Aspnas and Ina Marie Hjorth were named to the team.
Chaminade rips Academy of Art
Junior Matt Cousins had 13 points and 11 rebounds as Chaminade rolled Academy of Art, 86-63, in a Pacific West Conference men’s basketball game in San Francisco.
The Silverswords improved to 16-7 overall, 9-2 in conference. The Urban Knights are 5-18 and 2-11.
Grand Canyon drops HPU women
Grand Canyon University’s women’s basketball team shoved Hawaii Pacific out of first place in the Pacific West Conference yesterday with a 70-60 victory in Phoenix.
GCU is now 21-2 overall, 9-1 in conference. Jazzmin Awa-Williams scored 25 points for HPU (16-5, 10-2).
Lady Knights thrash Lady Swords
Academy of Art raced to 40-9 halftime lead and limited Chaminade to 8 percent first-half shooting en route to a 74-35 women’s basketball victory yesterday in San Francisco.
The Urban Knights improved to 8-14 and 6-7; the Lady Swords are 1-7 and 1-10.
