Kohles takes Burns Intercollegiate

Virginia’s Ben Kohles won a playoff with Max Honma of California and Texas A&M’s John Hurley to take medalist honors at the John Burns Intercollegiate golf tournament at Turtle Bay yesterday.

Kohles birdied the second playoff hole after finishing the tournament at 10 under par after a final-round 67.

California won the team title by six strokes over Texas A&M. Hawaii finished in ninth place, 36 strokes off the lead. Brigham Young-Hawaii (+19) finished in 13th, UH-Hilo (+31) in 14th and Hawaii Pacific (+32) took 15th in the 17-team field.

TJ Kua was Hawaii’s best finisher, shooting a final-round 70 to land in a tie for 14th at 4 under par.

Vitale to defend against Clay

X-1 Middleweight champion Niko Vitale will defend his strap against X-1 welterweight champion Dylan Clay in the main event of an MMA event March 12 at the Blaisdell Arena.

Harris Sarmiento, Max Holloway, Ricky Wallace, Eben Kaneshiro, Russell Doane and Van Oscar Penovaroff will also be on the card.

Seasiders sweep Silverswords

Annie Hwang beat Yanita Arnaudova 6-0, 6-0 and the rest of the Brigham Young-Hawaii women’s tennis team beat Chaminade 9-0 yesterday in Laie.

Yuan Jia, Elwen Li, Sasha Ulbrichtova, Salina Aranda and Sophia Simmons all swept their singles matches for the Seasiders.
