Moore, Ho win their heats at Roxy Pro Gold Coast

Hawaii surfers Carissa Moore and Coco Ho won their opening-round heats yesterday in the Roxy Pro Gold Coast at Snapper Rocks in Australia.

Moore put up a two-wave score of 14 out of a possible 20 points, easily outdistancing Jessie Miley-Dyer of Australia and Alana Blanchard of Hawaii in Heat 5.

In the next heat, Ho scored 14.66, edging American Courtney Conlogue, whose wave scores totaled 13.88.

In the men’s Quiksilver Pro, also at Snapper Rocks, Hawaii’s Fred Patacchia finished second in Heat 4 and Dusty Payne finished third in Heat 7.

Northwest Nazarene belts HPU

Zach Morse hit a two-run double and Ty Windall had three hits to lead Northwest Nazarene to a 13-7 baseball victory yesterday over Hawaii Pacific at Hans L’Orange Park. The Crusaders (11-1) broke open a close game with six runs in the fifth inning.

Troy Ajer went 4-for-5 with three RBIs for the Sea Warriors (2-8).

Grand Canyon rolls over UHH

Samantha Murphy scored 20 points to lead Grand Canyon to a 77-48 romp over Hawaii-Hilo in women’s basketball last night in Hilo.

The Antelopes improved to 24-2 overall and 12-1 in the Pacific West Conference. Jazmine Corpuz led the Vulcans (9-14, 5-10) with 12 points.

Dixie State edges Brigham Young-Hawaii

Sheila Adams scored 20 points to lead Dixie State past Brigham Young-Hawaii 75-70 in women’s basketball last night at Laie.

The Red Storm improved to 22-2 overall and 12-1 in the PacWest.

Richelle Rieben led the way for the Seasiders (5-18, 3-10) with 23 points.

Hawaii water polo team wins 2

No. 4 Hawaii won two women’s water polo matches at a tournament hosted by UC Irvine in California yesterday.

The Rainbow Wahine beat No. 12 Cal State Northridge 12-5 and followed up with a win over No. 4 California 6-5.

Monika Eggens and Saara Majuri scored three goals apiece in the first game. Eggens added two goals in the second game.

San Diego State trips UH in tennis

San Diego State defeated Hawaii 5-2 in a tennis match yesterday at the UH Tennis Complex.

The Aztecs (6-5) swept the three doubles matches and then won four of the six singles matches.

Katarina Poljakova and Aglae Van den Berg were the singles winners for the Rainbow Wahine (3-7).

BYUH beats Cal State Northridge

Brigham Young-Hawaii defeated Cal State Northridge in women’s tennis yesterday in Laie.

Yuan Jia, Elwen Li Boud and Shawni Porter all won singles and doubles matches for the Seasiders (4-0).

Hemmings to speak at QB club

Former state senator and world surfing champion Fred Hemmings will be a guest speaker at tomorrow’s luncheon meeting of the Honolulu Quarterback Club.

Other scheduled speakers are Bob Sigall, author of "The Companies We Keep," and Nancy Mangery, a representative for the National Veterans Golden Age Games.

The meeting is at Maple Garden Restaurant on Isenberg St. The lunch is at 11:30 a.m. with the program starting at noon. The cost is $15 and the public is invited.
